CYMAZ announces upcoming CYMAZ Nights at Livewire!

As part of the CYMAZ Progression and Performance Strand, CYMAZ is working in partnership with Livewire Youth Music Project in Saltash and The House in St Austell. Dates confirmed for Livewire nights are 6th March and 12th April. Dates at the House are still to be confirmed. For details about performing or coming along to the gigs contact Giles Woolley on Giles@cymaz.co.uk. Performance slots are limited and are aimed at young people from CYMAZ groups but if you are not involved in a CYMAZ group and would like to put your name on the list or come along to the gigs anyway, please get in touch. Christmas cards on sale to support Barnardo’s

Young people in Cornwall have been involved in a creative project with Barnardo’s and some young people in Short Stay Schools have created some really great Christmas Cards designs and they’ve now had these professionally printed in packs of 10.

They’re just £3.99 and the profits are shared between Barnardos and the young people who’ve created them which they’ll receive in the form of gift vouchers. The young people will also be selling these cards in person at Barnardo’s high street stores in Penzance (Tues 13th 10am-12pm) and Saltash (Weds 14th 2-4pm) and at the Nine Maidens School Christmas Fayre at Murdoch House, Truro on Weds 14th (10.30am-12.30pm).

We hope you’ll agree that engaging 14-16 year olds, excluded from mainstream education in positive / work related activities whilst simultaneously boosting their confidence and self-esteem should be encouraged in these tough times.

CYMAZ Radio live broadcast from the Eden Project

In collaboration with Humphry Davy School and the Penzance Pirates, CYMAZ Radio was at the Green is Global 2011 conference at the Eden Project today (12th October). We hope you enjoyed our first live broadcast from the Eden Project today. We highly recommend you listen again as the Pearl Of Africa choir from Uganda were amazing and there was even an interview with an explorer Anthony Jinman. You can listen again here….

Talented young people make first CYMAZ Night a great success!

Young people from the CYMAZ Network came together from across Cornwall to showcase and celebrate their talents on the prestigious stage at Livewire on 29th September. The evening was hosted by young radio presenters Adam (Helston), Cameron (Tywardreath near St Austell) and Chris (St Austell) who kept the crowd entertained throughout the 3 hour show which was broadcast live over the internet. Young audience members, from across Cornwall, were treated to the spine tingling vocals of Chelsea Hancock, aged 15 from the House youth centre in St Austell. Chelsea said ‘CYMAZ has helped me with my confidence a lot. Now I’ve come out of my shell and will talk to anyone’. Credicide, a young band from the Saltash area got the crowd really buzzing with their impressive set. Helston is extremely lucky to be home to the extremely talented and charming Beth Chapman, who treated the audience with her beautiful vocals and guitar skills, playing her own unique versions of some classic covers. The evening was ended after a set from Helston’s Operated By Fire who brought incredible energy, talent and personality to the stage and reported it ‘was the best gig we have ever done!’ The show included audio clips from other CYMAZ groups across Cornwall. Jane Staffieri (Director of CYMAZ) said ‘this night is really big for CYMAZ, some of these young people don’t get very many opportunities and we want to nurture and support their talent. The stage at Livewire is a platform that so many young people aspire to play on and we’re delighted to have helped make that happen for some young people. It is testament to the work of the CYMAZ Music Leaders and the youth workers who help to make this possible.’

On Thursday 29th September CYMAZ launches a series of ‘CYMAZ Nights’ starting with a fantastic line up at Livewire Youth Music Project in Saltash. Hosted by young people, the FREE gig will feature talented young people from across the county giving them the chance to perform in front of a live audience at this amazing venue. Eden launches ‘Bright Young Things’ competition

This year’s Bright Young Things talent showcase is now open for entries from budding young photographers, writers, artists, dancers, musicians and film-makers in the South West.

Inspiration and information on how to enter is at www.edenproject.com/brightyoungthings and Eden is delighted to be working with friends at the Arts Award on this year’s event.

As the showcase event takes place in 2012, the year of the London Olympics, the chosen theme is Gold, to inspire this year’s entries.

Announcement of CYMAZ AGM – 13th October 2011

The next CYMAZ Annual General Meeting will be held from 6:30pm on Thursday 13th October 2010 at W13 Krowji, The Old Grammar School, West Park, Redruth, TR15 3AJ. The AGM will be followed by an exciting line up of young musicians from across the county next door to the CYMAZ office in the Melting Pot. This is part of a series of CYMAZ Nights across the county and is open to members of the public to come and see the talent and achievements of young people CYMAZ works with.

Calling all Cornish bands and songwriters

Could you represent Cornwall and a festival in Ireland?

The search is on to find a song to represent Cornwall at the Pan Celtic Festival in Ireland in April 2012. A competition, the Kan rag Kernow, is being held in Cornwlal this autumn to find the winning Cornish song to go to Ireland.

Entries to the Kan rag Kernow competition should be newly composed and are welcomed in any genre of music. All songs must be written and performed in the Cornish language. Free help is available for writing lyrics in Cornish.
