Progression and Performance

CYMAZ launched a Progression and Performance strategy in 2011. This aims to bring the Young People’s Music and Radio Network to life by providing and supporting a range of progression and performance opportunities across the county.

Youth Music research carried out last year demonstrates evidence that there are a number of ingredients necessary to fully support young people’s progression and musical development. These include high quality music making activity and support and chances to perform. Having the focus of a performance to work towards builds confidence, gives focus and increases aspiration.

Our partners so far under this strand of work are; Livewire Youth Music Project in Saltash, The House Youth Centre in St Austell and The Melting Pot at Krowji and Youth Cornwall.

There are currently opportunities for young people to progress with their musical skills through regular music making sessions at Livewire, The House, Helston Youth Centre, Fourways Youth Centre, Newquay Youth Centre and in some isolated rural communities (see DCMS Rehearsal Spaces). There are also Masterclasses coming up for CYMAZ participants.

So far, there have been three ‘CYMAZ Nights’, one in each venue. Each performance has showcased talent from across the county and provided the chance for young people to experience performing in new venues, meeting young people from different areas and experiencing the talents of other young people.

The overwhelming response is that young people (performers and audience), youth workers and music leaders have been delighted with the outcomes and impact of the performances.

“The young people had a good time and were pleased with their own performance. They enjoyed talking about the other acts too and discussing what could be learnt in terms of performance style. All agreed that the gig had been a success but it also seemed to have opened up the cracks in terms of individual expectations within the group with regard to style and genre.” (CYMAZ music leader)

‘I feel awesome, pretty pumped up! Just want to keep gigging and pleasing audiences.’ (The House Band at The House after a CYMAZ Night)

‘I feel overwhelmed by people, the reaction was amazing… I was scared but I did it.’ (performer at The House)
