CYMAZ Internet Radio Station
CYMAZ Radio, launched in November 2010, is an internet radio station that has been developed based on the expressed needs of children and young people. Until now, there has been no county-wide radio provision dedicated to young people in Cornwall. Click here to see the aims of CYMAZ Radio.
We know from research carried out in the county that 58% of Cornish young people do not feel that their views are listened to and 62% young people require far better information and advice about things which affect them. 28% of children and young people said they don’t use any medium to communicate their views. (TellUs3 Survey – Kernow Matters 2008)
CYMAZ Radio aims to be 40% speech, 60% music and is a safe, Ofcom registered, platform for youth voice and influence. It is a dynamic and engaging way for agencies and services to circulate their messages to young people and is an effective learning tool.
Teams of young people are being developed in CYMAZ Radio Hubs (click link for more details) around the county, learning how to be researchers, producers and presenters.
As part of the pilot, training courses for young people were delivered at The House, St Austell and Livewire Youth Music Project, Saltash and Humphry Davy School in Penzance. The young people are planning their own shows including making jingles, creating idents for the station and interviewing bands. One team is making a programme about a metal single produced at Livewire to raise money to build a school in Haiti!! At Humphry Davy School, CYMAZ offered radio training to over 80 teaching staff and in partnership with the school, radio has become embedded within the whole school curriculum. Simeon Royale, Assistant Head Teacher said;
‘Working with Moss and CYMAZ Radio, podcasting has now become commonplace in our classrooms. What started off as a new complicated novelty type activity just for the ‘tekkies’ is now part of every Humphry Davy teachers’ toolkit. Recording of podcasts and radio materials is now much more matter of fact and often student led. It is a super way of presenting work, and many students have been motivated by projects involving podcasting and have raised their game accordingly when they realise that their work is for a wider audience.’
If you are a young person or agency which works with young people and would like to involved in CYMAZ Radio, please contact Moss, our Radio Station Project Manager for more details. Even if you have no experience in radio but you’d like to have a go at things like; presenting a show, scooping the latest stories, meeting a variety of new people, learning new media skills, come and find out more.
