Case study on ‘B’
At the beginning of the programme B was unsure what his role might be as he was not willing to talk on air and was also not sure that he could be assertive enough to become a producer, and pass his ideas on to others.
Over the weeks B become more and more confident in his abilities.
It began when B asked if we could venture into town to conduct some vox pops.
At first B found it really difficult to approach people and was incredibly nervous of how people would perceive him. I approached a couple of people and showed B what it was like, and thankfully got someone who wasn’t interested, so that he could see how I dealt with that.
Through out the programme B has gained confidence. He now produces and presents his own shows and has managed to grow enough to compere a health promotion event in Penzance, and is preparing to co host the celebration event that is being planned.
He also assisted on another Voltage project with a group from Carefree, where he was bold enough to take on the role of producer and put forward his ideas for a radio play to them, which the group then took on board and used as the basis for their radio project.
CYMAZ Radio in Humphry Davy School, Penzance
CYMAZ Radio provided training for a group of students plus audio recording training for 80 teaching staff. Through partnership and continued support and access to CYMAZ and CYMAZ Radio resources and skills, radio programmes are now being created on monthly basis, across the curriculum.
Simeon Royale, assistant Headteacher said:
“The use of radio and TV technology as a tool for learning is a massive growth area at Humphry Davy and I am delighted the school can play such a central role in the development of the new radio station. We are delighted to be leading the way in Cornwall using new technologies to help raise standards. We are all very excited about the new opportunities that our partnership with CYMAZ has created.”
Simeon commented that ‘working with Moss and CYMAZ Radio, podcasting has now become commonplace in our classrooms. What started off as a new complicated novelty type activity just for the ‘tekkies’ is now part of every Humphry Davy teachers‘ toolkit. Recording of podcasts and radio materials is now much more matter of fact and often student led. It is a super way of presenting work, and many students have been motivated by projects involving podcasting and have raised their game accordingly when they realise that their work is for a wider audience.’
